Drapery is made from cloth material. It is mostly decorative in order to enhance the look of your living space.

Benefits: Drapery is used to block the sun and keep some of the view while maintaining your privacy. Drapery cam fit almost every opening although it is considered a vertical treatment. They are used to cover wide openings and over sliding doors. Draperies have the highest R-value when they are lined with room-darkening material, and they tend to absorb the echo in areas with high ceiling or wood floor.

Locations: Drapery can be used in both residential homes and commercial buildings to improve heat control and privacy at the same time. Blackout draperies are used in hotels for a better sleep experience and privacy. Sheer draperies are used to add a filter between the inside environment and the outside. The decorative panels are used to beautify the area and to soften the room. Draperies are used equally in commercial buildings and residential homes; with the latest wide-blinds collection, the demand on draperies is dropping.

Mounting requirements:  Drapery needs to have a minimum of 3 ½” mounting depth for the inside mount. Otherwise, it’s recommended to install them outside the mount.

Types: There are three main type of draperies (sheers, blackout, and decorative). The sheers act as a filter and provide privacy in the daylight. Blackout drapery completely cuts out the light. The decorative drapery materials enhance the look of your home.

Colors and patterns: Drapery fabrics are made of various materials. The most popular ones are: silk, cotton, and linen. Preference is always based on the consumer’s taste and the combination of the colors and patterns, such as: solids, chevron, embroidery, and stripes.

Recommended manufacturer: There is no preferred manufacturer for the fabrics, although there is a big difference in the quality between mills and the origin of the materials. Fabrics are like clothing brands, some fabric is more durable than others based on the thread count and quality.

Controls:  Draperies can be installed on manual traverse rods cord or wand-controlled. They can also be mounted on automated hardware to open and close by remote control. Additionally, they can be mounted on decorative hardware with finials.

Child-safety features: Drapery with a cord system requires the cord holder be mounted to keep the cord from the reach of children. The drapery hardware with wand control will be a safer option, as well as the motorized hardware.

Life expectancy: Drapery can last up to 25 years. It’s based on how long the fiber of the fabric lasts before it starts to disintegrate.

Cleaning recommendation: Dry cleaning is the recommended option for draperies. This will prevent any changes in length and keep the memory of the pleats.

What to consider before you buy: the selection of the fabric needs to meet the décor and the combination of colors and material type.
